ABOUT THE ARTIST

Experiential Landscapes Rooted In Time, Process, And Lived Experience

Where The Work Begins

“I stopped painting what I saw and started painting what I had lived.”

For years, I painted the landscape before me. Over time, however, life itself became the greater teacher. Hardships that began in childhood and continued into adulthood — including five years in which a genetic condition brought both my life and work to a standstill — fundamentally changed not only how I viewed the landscape, but why I painted it.

I came to recognize that nature’s greatest beauty is rarely untouched. Valleys are carved by relentless water. Mountains are formed under the harshest conditions. Light becomes most meaningful after the storm. Over time, I began to see those same truths reflected in our own lives — that beauty, resilience, perspective, and hope are often shaped through the experiences that test us most.

Today, I no longer paint specific places. I paint experiential landscapes shaped by a hard-earned perspective. While every painting begins with my own journey, it is ultimately completed by the life experiences each collector brings to it. My hope is that these landscapes become more than places to look at. I hope they become places to return to — offering clarity, perspective, quiet strength, and hope through every season of life.

Artist Biography

For years I painted the landscape before me. Today, I paint the landscape that life has left within me.

Kelly Sooter is a contemporary oil painter whose Experiential Landscapes are collected by individuals and placed by art advisors and collected by individuals who value clarity, perspective, and lasting presence. Rather than depicting a specific location, each painting becomes a reflection of life's journey—an invitation for collectors to discover their own experiences within the work.

Classical discipline forms the foundation of her work, while lived experience gives it its contemporary voice. After more than twenty years of study with four European Masters and two nationally recognized American landscape artists, Sooter developed the technical foundation to move beyond representation and create landscapes that speak to resilience, hope, renewal, and quiet strength.

Recurring elements such as pathways, water, distant horizons, and changing skies are not simply compositional choices; they serve as enduring metaphors for perseverance, transition, and the possibility that lies beyond today's horizon. While each painting begins with Sooter's own experiences, it is ultimately completed by the life experiences each collector brings to it.

Every painting is built through a deliberate multi-layered oil process that includes a refined reductive technique in which paint is selectively removed to reveal the colors beneath. Like the stories that inspire them, the paintings reveal their depth gradually, inviting new discoveries over years of living with them. Collectors often describe them as a enduring presence that brings clarity and perspective through every season of life.

Working in cohesive collections and maintaining a limited annual output, Sooter creates paintings for thoughtfully designed residences, executive offices, and spaces where reflection matters. Her work is intended not only to enrich a room, but to become a lasting companion—one that continues to reveal new meaning long after it leaves her studio.

Her work is held in private collections throughout the United States.
